Skin Configuration
The skin is made up of three layers of millions and millions of over-lapping “scales” tiny, microscopic particles called cells. Every day, some of these cells are scrapped off, allowing new ones to grow and the allowing the skin itself to be flexible. (That is why you do not have to shed your skin in a whole piece, as the snake does!)
Bleaching occurs when you apply certain chemicals on the skin with a view to removing the top layer of the skin in order to have a brighter complexion. The question is: Would you really want to split and shed your skin like a snake?

There is more to the skin than its elasticity and flexibility. When you bleach, you are practically depriving the skin of its protective vitamins and nutrients. The normal process is application of these bleaching chemicals on the skin, day in day out, year after year, until the skin becomes fed up of the process and becomes damaged eventually. Some people never think of stopping for a while to supply nutrients and vitamins to the skin even when there is a warning that the skin is becoming damaged. Some rub on skin-lightening chemicals and walk about in the heat of our glorious sunshine when in fact; ordinary incidental sun exposure can turn smooth skin into a mass of wrinkles and age spots.

The unfortunate thing is that for the unlucky ones, their skin gets burnt even after the first application. The skin is affected in many ways when bleached. They are:

Skin discoloration: The underlying skin cells are damaged and this leads to the development of discoloration under the skin, most often on faces, necks, and the knuckles.

Wrinkles occur especially when you go for a reagent stronger than the skin texture

Itching: Undefined itching arises due to prolonged use of various bleaching products

Stretch Marks: These appear and become obvious with some pigmentation on the upper arms, inner thighs, buttocks and on the stomach. They are different from the natural stretch marks which normally have fine line appearance.

Old age: It makes the affected person look older after prolong use.

Body Odor: Due to various reagents used, which may counter-effect each other, body odor arises.

Risk of infection: Because the skin has been robbed of its protective vitamins, body defense becomes low and susceptible to various skin diseases.
Cancer of the skin: The long time effect of bleaching can result to cancer of the skin. The skin is disturbed continuously, not allowed to function effectively, before one knows it, cancer has set in.

Skin bleaching and its effects
The skin: Most people are surprised to learn, for the first time, that the skin is the body’s largest organ. We usually think of the organs of the body as being on the inside, like the heart, or lungs, or stomach. But the skin, the largest organ of the body is on the outside.
The fact that the skin is on the outside has its advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages is that you can see it! If something goes wrong with this organ, you usually know it right away as you can feel the itch; see the redness, the rash, the pimple, the scaling, the wart, the tumor, the scratch, the cut, and the burns. Another advantage is that we usually don’t have to go inside the body to treat this organ.

How to correct damaged skin
The first and the most important point is to stop applying bleaching or skin-lightening products on the skin as soon as a reaction is noticed.

The fact of the matter is that some of today’s newest body care products are based on treatments initially used thousands of years ago. But there are natural benefits offered by the earth and even the ocean as natural alternative to skin lightening.

Clay cleansing: Clay was used by the ancient Greeks and Romans to whiten and tone the complexion naturally, and it has been used for hundreds of years in developed countries to ease pain, heal wounds and deep-cleanse the skin by drawing out impurities. Clay and mud contain a large number of minerals and trace elements which are believed can pass through the skin and affect the body. Even hi-tech companies reportedly use them.

Kaolin and fuller’s earths are the clays normally used in face masks. These inert substances have a high mineral content and can extract impurities. They are used in medicine, too – kaolin and morphine for stomach upsets and clay dressings for wounds.

Mud, Glorious Mud! Mud is clay’s closest relative. Equally rich in mineral deposits, therapeutic mud is harvested from areas around mineral springs. Spring water plus mud is known as taking the waters in spa cures. At some spas, you can have mud body wraps all over, as well as drink and bathe in the healing waters, which can do a lot to repair terrible skin conditions.

Secrets from the sea: The mineral content of seawater is almost identical to the water surrounding our body cells, and it has been used in therapy since the 19 th century. Today, there are several centers around the world where you can take seawater cure in which seawater is combined with mineral-rich seaweed, giving antibacterial and healing qualities for damaged skin.

Eat a diet that is low in fat and high in antioxidants, such as beta-carotene-rich carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, and spinach, cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels and spinach, cabbage, kale, and turnips; and citrus fruits.

Take protective measures while in the sun. The sun’s ultraviolet rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Stay out of the sun as much as possible between these hours. When spending time out doors, wear light-colored clothing made of tightly woven material, plus a hat and sunglasses that block ultraviolet rays. Always use natural sunscreen products. Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin, and re-apply every three or four hours while you are outside.

For quick relief of itching and inflammation, soak a clean cloth in cool water (or, for even greater soothing effect, in cooled comfrey tea), wring it out, and apply it to the affected area for 10 minutes. Repeat this procedure as often as necessary for relief.
Tea tree oil cream, applied topically, is a natural antiseptic and anti-fungal that enhances healing.

Aloe Vera – referred to, as the queen of the skin herb is reputed for its perfect healing effect on damaged skin.

Exercise: You have probably heard it said many times that part of staying healthy is regular exercise. Exercise affects the skin in two main ways: One, affecting the dermis and epidermis, the other affecting the fatty layer and the muscles that fill out the skin. One reason exercise makes you feel good is that it enables your blood circulate well and makes your body work.

With regular exercise, the skin is continually being provided with the nourishment it needs to build new cells while at the same time getting rid of waste materials. This means the skin will be fresh and healthy and look fresh and healthy; the circulation will be good which can give that healthy glow to the skin.

A supple, glowing, youthful and healthy skin is beauty. Bleaching or skin-lightening is injurious to the skin.
